Please join the community, and share your story. It can help you get express yourself in a safe forum and yourstory may save another person from feeling completely alone, or worse .... And worse can be anything from drinking, to abuse, to destructive behaviors, possibly even suicide. Alcoholism is a serious disease and it effects the lives of 80 million people in the United States, and that number maybe a low estimate. Sharing your story and connecting with another member in need can save a life. And I am not being dramatic. When it comes to Alcoholism, anything is possible. People who are in desperate need can be capable of any behavior. Share and help someone else who maybe in worse straits than you are. Or who is going through some aspect of the experience of Alcoholism that you have been through and recovered from. Help another with your story. She is 33. It is hard to define, her mental state. She will not take meds, has been diagnosed as being bipolar. She was an always unique, borderlining eccentric child. I tried to celebrate the differences. She had a child out of wedlock, had to give him to a family member, as she could not support him.She has turned so schitzoid, paranoid, it would take volumes to explain. As stated previously, I myself was addicted to narcotics for migraine for long time.I am free. She now resents my having gotten off of them. Sorry, long story. She will not consent to intervention. LOCAL police, hospitals all say they will not detain her, unles she HURTS herself.That makes me so angry and feel even more helpless. My God is still in the miracle working business. He healed my life, my faith says He is going to heal my child.Than you so much. This site will be a blessing to addicts and also to those who suffer along with them by association, of this terrible disease.

Dear Carol: one reason I had such a hard time staying sober more than six months at a time was that I am Bipolar. I see a professional and take certain meds. This has allowed me over the past 18 years to not drink with the exception of a couple of slips that lasted a day or two. But it was being Bipolar that had me self-medicating with Alcohol. And in turn , becoming an alcoholic and drinking daily crazy amounts of booze, anything I could get my hands on if needed. I was not far from Nick Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. Alcohol had me in it's grips for a longtime. I thank God that I found a sober way of life and that I have a normal life today and have had a normal life for the past 18 yrs. I thank God that while I was out there drinking - and driving - I did not kill myself or someone else. I am grateful. I count my blessings. I hope this site will help people. If it saves one life, just one life, than it is a success. - thanks.

Dear Carol, God helps those who help themselves. Healing is rarely miraculous and overnight. It takes hard work and a willingness to accept Gods guidance. There is a limit to how much you can do to help her. Most importantly is for you to take care of YOU first and foremost. Quietly begin taking excellent care of you. Take time to be alone with your thoughts (insist on zero interuptions for 10-20 mins), take short walks for excercise, choose healthy food. Do not suggest to her that she live the way you do...just do it for you. Part of what is keeping her "Stuck" is that u are both so wrapped up in her issues. Tell her that you love her and only want the best for her but that you also must begin respecting your own needs. It's the lead-by-example thing but it is also your responsibility as one of Gods children to take care of yourself! I am trained as a recovery coach and would be willing to give her a complimentary 50 min session if u think she would consider doing it. Best, Nancy@thehowlandway.com
